Our waste Regulatory Officers visited the scrapyard and agreed with the operator what mitigating action needs to happen to prevent similar releases in future. The quay is used for bulk loading of waste materials which can include scrap and tyre crumb on an ad hoc basis however waste material is not stored permanently in this area. When the bund is in use the drainage holes are blocked off, so water is contained within the bund. On this occasion the staining observed was not deemed to be causing a significant risk of harm to the environment.

0,0 1999737South Gare Breakwater0,0 04/ 10/ 21 15:30NEA- Dead Crabs / Suspected Water Pollution - Cat 3- ; Caller is a fisherman who fishes from crabs as bait at Bradsands beach on the river tees mouth near to the light tower; For the last week caller and other fishermen have noticed dead crabs in the tyres; They dont know what the cause is. It could be water pollution but there are no signs of pollution. The water is crystal clear. ; There are no signs of disease on crabs. There was a male crab which was carrying a dead female crab; Spoke to Natural England who mentioned that there has been a lot of dead birds along the coast; The tees is being dredged at the moment and caller thinks that maybe toxins from the past are being brought to the surface; Caller has not seen any other dead fish/ wildlifeInvestigations still ongoing and being led by DEFRA. As yet a definitive cause has not been found. This incident has been classified as a major event requiring a multi-agency response from the EA, NEIFCA, DEFAS, HSE, MMO and local authorities. Conclusion: Dead and dying crabs and lobsters were washed ashore in unusually large numbers, along parts of the North East coast, between October and December 2021. Crabs and lobsters were the only species that appear to have been affected by the incident. Dying crabs and lobsters displayed characteristic ‘twitching’ and lethargic behaviour. An extensive range of testing was undertaken over several months by Defra group agencies. Evidence suggests that a harmful algal bloom was the most likely cause of this incident. ; Other potential causes including chemical contamination, dredging, and discharges, and disease were also investigated. These all proved to be highly improbable reasons for the event and this view was supported following an independent scientific review.

Burst traced to Sandsend Road just prior to Sandsend Bridge, heading towards Whitby. Due to the time of night and the sensitivity of the location with the impact the repair was arranged immediately with 2 ways lights and repaired within hours. YW Incident Report to EA. The impact was clean water flowing through the wall into the area of sand at the side of East Row ; Beck. The beck then flows out onto the beach. The beach is tidally flushed twice a day. On this basis the impact will have been insignificant and only for a few hours whilst the burst was located and flow reduced.YW operations attended site and inspected the beach at both locations and confirmed that full flows where being delivered to prevent area flooding. Flows subsided overnight into the morning of the 7th and the discharge stopped at around 23:40. YW operations returned to site on the morning of the 7th and carried out a visual beach check for litter and debris, but none was witnessed.

0,0 2121692Red Howles0,0 06/ 01/ 23 08:27NEA - Water pollution - Red Howles - Cat 3 - No SSSI/ SPZ, no impact; Caller is reporting a sewage out spill; Caller states a mechanical failure occurred over night and spilled in the north sea; Caller states no impact on the watercourse; Caller states no odour; Caller states it has been investigated and remedied; Caller states it might have impacted on bathing but most likely not; Caller states it was happening 1:12 this morning and finished at 1:46am; Caller states the crew member realised the failure at 7:30am; Caller states just here to inform us no attendance required from EA staff; Caller states the problem is fixed; Caller states no reference number to give; Call this number 07966879287 for more detailsThis incident was reported retrospectively the morning after the incident when it became clear there had been a discharge from the site due to a mechanical fault that occurred in the early hours of the morning. As there was no failure of the electrical drives the system controls believed the site was working as it should so there was no alarm generated to alert the standby operator to any faults. The incident resulted in a short duration overflow of screened and de-gritted sewage into the North Sea via the long sea outfall. Based on the low night-time foul flows combined with rainfall diluting flows shortly before the discharge together with favourable tidal conditions the dilution factor would have been exceptionally high. Conclusion: Therefore, incident unlikely to have had a detrimental impact to the environment.

A&R team member (marine) investigated beaches in the north of the Area to assess whether similar observations seen. Observations confirmed presence of lots of coal dust indicative of rough seas. No mussels observed however given geographical location this was expected as no mussel beds in these areas. Presence of coal dust along the NE shores indicated rough seas and could account for the black debris observed by the reporter. It is also likely that the levels of coal dust observed could change the taste and chemical composition of the sea water and explain the change in taste etc observed by the reporter. Conclusion: natural wash up after rough seas given no other signs of pollution.

They were all dead.; Thank youL&W TL contacted A&R team for expert marine opinion as suspicions are that this is a continuation of a previous event reported last week. A&R TL has confirmed nothing suspicious in photos received and agrees that cause is likely to be the source of reports received by surfer earlier in the week - washup as a result of rough seas (which are common this time of year)

Reports there was a load of black sediment noticed as far as they could see north of Saltburn Pier.  The reporter also claimed there were also lots of dead razor clams and crabs noticed as well on the beach.  First noticed tonight (17th March) at around 7:00pm/ 7:30pm. Never seen this before here and they have no idea what has caused this. Recent weather conditions and lack of evidence of pollution support view that this is a Natural wash up event. Supported by presence of sea coal.

BP1110651143691; Contact Number. 07791175901Investigation identified that there was a build op of FOG within the network and that this had also impacted the small foul only SPS. NWL Production operators in attendance however they were unable to gain immediate access to the SPS control panel housed within a block of residential flats. A tanker was requested to reduce levels and access was eventually gained to the control panel and the pumping station returned to normal operation later the same evening. Based on low flows, sample data and photographic evidence suggests no impact on the receiving water however discharge from unmapped SW outfall into Marina, which is a still body of water, offers dilution but no dispersal. Marina sample for Ammonium at time of discharge was 0.3 mg/ l, which is an increase from the samples taken 3 days later of 0.138 and 0.174 mg/ l which were used as a baseline reading for Ammonium in the Marina. Samples taken 3 days later to assess baseline Ammonium levels could have been picking up residual levels from the earlier discharge due to lack of water movement and may not have been a true indication of baseline levels in the Marina, which may be lower.
